Do you make use of a To Do List?
Is everything on the list always done and on time?
I doubt it.
Working with a to do list does of course have its benefits. It allows you to focus your attention on tasks needed to be fulfilled. By organizing the tasks you can create balance in your life and stop juggling, from which you will, eventually, get stressed.
There are however two aspects here that you do not often hear about:
1) You can get stressed by the time limits you, or others, set.
Too much attention is put on the time limit which is by the way very often very unrealistic. That is enough to drive you crazy. You give away too much energy by focusing on the wrong issue. Many will tell you otherwise, but you can NOT manage time. It’s the energy levels and tasks you can manage.
2) You are not paying attention to the fact that there are certain tasks you do NOT need to perform.
How many tasks do you perform in a day that are unnecessary en rob you of your time? How often do you allow others to define how your precious time will be used? All of this drains your energy and time and doesn’t allow you to get on with the tasks that ARE important and NEED to be done and which you WANT to finish.
So here is a simple, quick tip for you. The next time you make a to do list,
add another column with: Not To Do.
You then create a chance to:
- kick out your own useless habits which rob you of your precious time and energy
- stop others from defining what you will or not do
- make the time for the important tasks at hand
- actually finish all the tasks on your list
