LETTING INTUITION WORK FOR YOU
The psychologist Carl Jung was once asked if he believed in God. He responded I don’t just believe, I know. Intuitives often feel the same way, many of you as readers don’t just believe it exists, you know it does. Intuition is just another sense like seeing, hearing or smelling. It’s a sense we all share.
WHAT IS INTUITION? Intuition is knowing without knowing why. I consider it to be a form of soul guidance. Tibetan Buddhists see intuition as a way to apprehend the essence of life, the source of ultimate truth and wisdom. We are constantly receiving inner guidance and gathering data from the right side of our brain. This is the nonlinear, virtual, feeling, spatial, subjective side that brings us gut feelings, flashes, glimpses, signs, symbols and inner hits from our deeper knowing. It often doesn’t make sense, is elusive and can’t be reproduced. These gut feelings or intuitions are then interpreted with the help of our analytic, linear or left side of our brain. We can use intuition for help with everything from practical problems like finding lost people and objects to enhancing creativity. Also, it can provide greater understanding and help us answer questions like, “why am I here”.
HOW DO WE GET INTUITIVE MESSAGES? How does information come in? The messages we receive comes into our body’s energy system through our chakras, especially the 2nd (gut), 5th(throat) chakras and 6th (third eye between our eyebrows). Intuitive information enters our right brain through our virtual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory senses. After receiving the intuitive messages in our right brain we translate them into information and words or actions using the analytical processing in our left brain. Is the intuitive hit coming from my inner truth or from my ego? Sometimes there are chills or a tingling that comes with the information. An inner sense of peace, quiet or calm may remain after an intuitive hunch.
Intuition is more likely to thrive in an environment that creates a higher state of consciousness. States like driving a car, playing a musical instrument, exercising or washing the dishes are conducive to creating an intuitive state. Dreams, songs, books, ideas and friends can all be sources of intuitive messages.
Medium James van Praagh suggests that with guidance there will be a warm glow, no pressure, everything flows, others will agree, serendipity occurs and ideas keep returning. If everything is going right and there seems to be no glitches, you’re open to spirit and following guidance. If on the other hand, nothing seems to be working out, you’re not listening to guidance and may need to listen again within.
Anytime we engage our right brain we are opening up to intuition. Taking time to slow down and get quiet can enhance our intuition. Creating a sacred space to receive and go within opens up the channels to receive guidance. Meditating, exercising, journaling can also enhance intuition. Practicing loving kindness in the world opens our heart and makes us more open to receive intuitions. Also, it helps to practice on things that don’t matter such as who’s calling on the phone or what grocery line will open up next.
The depths of our intuition can be reached by beginning with a meditation practice or divination work like astrology, runes, tarot, and dream work. Any tool that will take you inside to your inner guidance, a place of complete silence and just being is healing for our intuitive natures. I was gifted a set of runes and found them to be a great tool for enhancing self-awareness and helping me tune into my intuition. I began pulling runes every morning and evening with my rune workbook and found that there was a rhythm and flow to the day that would be reflected in evening rune chosen. I have a set of runes in my car along with angel and gratitude cards. Sometimes I will be driving thinking about an issue and try to guess what rune I will pull to fit the situation. To my amazement sometimes my intuition is right on and other times I couldn’t have guessed the deeper meaning reflected through the runes around an issue on a deeper level.
We all know that intuition is a gift we are all born with and that if we allow it will enrich our lives. By enhancing our body awareness and receptivity and how we receive intuitive hits we can spur these spontaneous hits of knowing. We can encourage our intuition through a variety of techniques. In my class on intuition I am always awed by the power, depth of women’s intuition and how if we can simply trust it how it will transform not only our lives but those and the living planet around us. The impact of awakening intuition may reach farther than our own lives, creating a sense of international connectedness.
