Astrology of Desire

The planet Mars represents your desires, impulses and sexual expression in astrology. Where Mars appears in your horoscope, indicates how you take action. When Mars is not hampered by other influences, there is direct flow to act on desires with awareness.

Depending on your personality, you may react optimistically or you may feel defeated before you begin. If Mars is challenged in some way, it may indicate trouble actualizing goals. For instance, if the planet Saturn is making a geometric aspect to Mars in your horoscope, it may hint at a history of being thwarted by authority figures or bureaucracy. Although this isn't always the way life has to play out, it may dampen your enthusiasm.

Mars in an earth sign (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo) likes to create concrete results. They recognize the value in building a business, earning a degree or skill. They tend to be good at working with their hands and get satisfaction out of doing things that take time.

Since Mars was the warrior god, it also indicates how you express anger. As you might expect from their element, Mars in earth signs are usually slow to anger. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) flare up hot, although for how long and dramatically depends on the sign. Although anger must be expressed, it is not always appropriate to do so in the heat of the moment or directly to the catalyst. When calculated beforehand, Fire Mars' expression of anger can be brilliant and champion the underdog.

In water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) Mars may withdraw or unleash a tsunami of passion at the initiator of their anger. There is an art to delivering the message with flowing force, and when a Water Mars has mastered this, all are swept away by the effectiveness of his/her expression. This is infinitely preferable to the other side of water, which sulks or lashes out with passive aggression.

Mars also symbolizes the libido, the source energy that creates and expresses desire. How you go after what you want and your impulses towards sexual expression are found in the placement of Mars. Air sign Mars (Libra, Aquarius, Gemini) like to talk their excitement, so they need partners who talk back, or at least listen actively.

Fire sign Mars are impulsive and passionate. Earth signs take their time and tend to be very physical. Water signs sweep into deep merger with their beloved. When lovers have very different Mars signs, there would have to be connections to their Venus or Moon to keep them relating in the lovemaking dance. Otherwise, an awareness of their different needs and styles may help them connect or perhaps decide, "why bother?"
