It is almost inevitable that you will have a credit problem or two in your lifetime. Very few people escape it, especially ordinary working people who were not born into wealth.
The current economic conditions are only contributing further to credit problems and issues. Luckily repairing your credit and removing negative credit from your reports is possible because good credit is required to get home mortgages, automobile loans, credit cards and more.
If you need to repair your credit your first step would be to get a free credit report from the three main credit reporting agencies, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Each report will contain different items so it is important to make sure and check them all. When you get all three reports you will able to be sure that you know about all of your credit.
Find the negative listings on the reports and then start working towards getting those removed. Often you can dispute a negative account and any inconsistencies by writing a letter to the credit reporting agencies. Just be specific about what you want changed and make sure that you keep copies of everything that you send.
Another consideration when repairing your credit it to look at the good credit, make sure that your good credit is improved as much as possible. Request a higher credit limit with the debtors that you are in good standing with. After they approve the higher limit just leave it alone and do not use any of the additional credit that they extended. In order to have the highest credit scores you will need to keep your debt balances at 30% or less of your credit limits.
Stop accumulating additional debt. Build your long-term credit by getting a solid history of good payments with the creditors who will regularly report your good credit to the bureaus. Keep all of your current obligations up to date and do not use all of the credit that you have. It is a funny thing but the people who have the highest credit scores are the ones who have high credit limits and low debt. They have credit but they don’t use credit.
